The Technology of Self-Love -- Wisdom Healing Qigong

The Technology of Self-Love

By Master Mingtong Gu and Jaelle Dragomir, MA

In our lifetime there has never been a more dramatic time of challenge and hope occurring simultaneously.  This opportunity can best be realized by the most powerful and potent course of action one can choose in any time or era, but especially now by “investing” inwardly and starting this new year with self-love to fulfill the calling of our spirit within.

In the 5,000-year-old tradition of Qigong, we can learn how to effectively realize the power of unconditional self-love. The 6 Golden Keys practice that includes inner acceptance, inner smile, trust, service, the chi field and continuous practice is a technology we can utilize.

Given the many ways in which our society tells us that we are incompetent or unworthy, how do we love ourselves unconditionally? To begin, self-love means total acceptance of ourselves; accepting our perceived failures as well as our perceived successes. Often times our internal dialog with and about ourselves focuses on our perceived negative aspects. An example of a negative thought is “If only I hadn’t done that, then I wouldn’t be in this situation.” There is a feeling of victimization. An example of a positive thought is “I ate healthy food so now I’m experiencing health.” There is a feeling of happiness. Occasionally we have neutral thoughts, but most often we identify our thoughts as positive or negative, bad or good.

However, there is another reference system we can utilize. Thoughts that strengthen our energy and heal us are positive thoughts. Thoughts that limit our healing are negative. Positive and negative thoughts are not about moral values. Things that are positive for you may be negative for another. Negative and positive are relative. If your thought contributes to a purpose you are focusing on, then the thought is productive or positive for that purpose. On the other hand, if the thought is limiting that purpose, it is negative.  So when you think loving, positive thoughts about yourself, you are automatically enhancing your own energy and contributing to your purpose and healing.

Wisdom Healing Qigong teaches us how to cultivate our thoughts more effectively to enhance our ability to love ourselves. No judgment or discrimination is involved. You decide what is good for you by tune into your own energy body. Visualize loving, healing thoughts as fully as you can within your body. You may notice that limiting thoughts somehow creep into the background. But gradually, when you love yourself and have full acceptance of yourself, limiting thoughts will start to lose their power, then eventually lose their appearance, and dissolve from your mind stream. Your mind is resting in knowing that all is well in its natural state --- it is summarized by “Haola”, all is well in the wholistic existence of the universe.

Another component to self-love is the inner smile. Begin the inner smile with your eyes closed and visualize the smile in the center of your forehead. Then let the inner smile radiate into your eyes and then into each part of your body. The inner smile brings the wisdom frequency of love into our awareness, our experience. The inner smile brings the thoughtfulness, happiness, joy and unconditional love into the body, into the energy field, so we can attain love for ourselves unconditionally.

Another component of self-love is trust. Allow yourself to trust and experience yourself and the universe fully in this moment. Not with the condition that “If the universe is working with me then I’ll trust and experience it,” but give yourself 100% permission to trust continuously. Whatever percentage you trust, whether it’s 20 percent or 90 percent today, you can learn to cultivate your trust of the universe and yourself.  Total trust in yourself and the universe is deeply transforming and once you give yourself total permission to trust you start to feel the love from your heart and that love can express itself in many ways.

One of the ways love can be expressed is through service. In Wisdom Healing Qigong, we’re cultivating the service consciously and energetically. The way to cultivate the service is to share your love, your presence, and your intention. Cultivate love by expressing love in the energy field by visualizing everybody benefiting from and realizing the same healing that you desire. By visualizing family members, friends, the community, all sentient beings, in your energetic field of love, you’re projecting the energy to them. Sending this blessing is the ultimate service.

When you’re serving, you’re not really giving yourself to another person. You’re creating a condition to allow the universal energy to flow to another person as well as yourself. By serving another person, community or purpose, you also open your own energy channels. When you share, naturally your heart opens up, naturally the energy of the universe responds to your desire more energetically, more deeply. So giving and receiving come together.  By sharing your love with intention, your energy starts to amplify and you start to receive more energy, more love with awareness, more fulfillment through sharing.

Often we have a strong desire to share ourselves with others and in some ways, we may deplete ourselves, feel overwhelmed, stressed, and not producing the result we want. When that happens, the heart starts to contract.  Our health starts to deteriorate. So the key here is to start by energetically working (or playing) with the universal chi field.

The chi field we are cultivating is not just our intention of love, not just wanting to serve, but we are cultivating how to serve more effectively. The chi field, simply put, represents the energy field we all connect with. For example, in Qigong, many people are practicing and contributing to the unified energy field for the specific purpose of healing. So any key ingredients, thoughts, movement, sound, or contributions are serving that purpose of healing. Every individual in the group is contributing, for the greatest good, to that purpose of the unification of that energy. So through time (past, present and future) healing is continuously happening in that chi field. It is a collective wisdom energy: an informational structure. The Qigong practice is awakening that energy structure that is deep inside of us.

By awakening that energy structure we resonate more with that wisdom healing energy.  By reinforcing, deeply awakening, and receiving energy from the universe, we’re sharing more with the larger chi field and energy starts to harmonize itself.  Whatever is not serving the purpose of healing starts to dissolve, release, and transform into a pattern of healing, harmony, and happiness. The larger the chi field we can open to, connect with, be one with, then the more service we can provide, the higher purpose we can serve and the more effective we become.

Effectiveness can manifest in instantaneous healing in the body, awakening of the consciousness, in a total resolution of a relationship, and so on. Normally, we think we are serving when we are giving something. We believe we have a limited amount of love and energy to give. That pattern of thought about service depends on the tangible, physical phenomenon to serve others.

However, serving through the chi field is very different. Not only do we utilize energy inside of us, we utilize the energy field around us and the energy field around the person we’re serving. As an analogy, let’s think of the human body as a bottle. Your mind is incapable of encompassing the entire energy field but by projecting energy into this bottle, from the universe, the energy fills that bottle. You can “fulfill” the person you are serving and at the same time, you are “fulfilled”. You feel love and loved. The energy is there for you and you can share this in service as you help the other person(s) open up their bottle, and you guide the energy to fill the bottle. When you look at a person, you not only see the bottle, you see that person inside the chi field, that life, that energy, between the energy of the heaven and the earth. This is the service of the chi field; bringing that universal energy into where you want to concentrate healing, service, and sharing.

Here, we are using healing as an example, but it’s the same for other things. When we listen to the story of another person encountering a challenge, we provide a bigger space than the story itself. Not to attach to that story, the hardship, or the trauma, but to listen with the awareness of releasing that story to the big universe instead of getting to the bottom of the problem. “Poor you, poor me.” Soon everything becomes poor and the bottle becomes closed.  You help that person open the bottle, even just by listening to a little of that story and giving an inner smile to it without reacting. Then you’re doing service. You can apply that principle when you’re doing other service in your church, in the environment, or in politics. It’s the same thing.

Today we have a wonderful opportunity. We can really feel the big heart opening more to the future-present. If everyone was connected with his or her big heart, imagine that power. No one would push anyone away. We wouldn’t feel that we could only support one group. Through the chi field we can support all there is. There is plenty of life energy so the key is where the mind is connecting with the energy. If the mind is thinking, “I have a limited amount of energy,” then we can only serve in a very limited way.

If the mind is thinking it has a lot of energy in the ocean of chi energy, not just in the bottle, then it can fill many bottles. But you have to learn how to fill yourself first. If you don’t know how to fulfill your own calling of your spirit, it doesn’t matter how large the ocean is, you’re bottle is still empty. Qigong teaches us how to fill this bottle; fulfill our self-realization through self-love.

In any spiritual tradition, in any practice, we are cultivating unconditional love and sharing. By sharing our energy field, we expand our energy field. Of course to fill the energy body, continuously receiving is part of the sharing. Giving and receiving become very natural in the process of sharing.  Additionally, the inner smile provides such an opportunity. Giving ourselves that opportunity to bring happiness and healing to ourselves is the blessing of serving. Once you have that energetic understanding, then we know we won’t deplete ourselves. By practicing the 6 Golden Keys, we learn self-love to fulfill the calling of our spirit within.
